Shanghai, June 27, 2023 – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has recently been honored with multiple recognitions, acknowledging its ongoing commitment to sustainable development and industry progression. The awards, received from the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM) and Chinese and Foreign Coatings Net (CFCN) separately, include the 2023 Responsible Care Best Company Award, 2023 Responsible Care Best Project - Green Footprint Award, and 2022 Open-to-Public Day Best Practice Award, in addition to being named the Outstanding Raw Material Supplier at the 14th Gold Award of China Coatings.

“As a chemical company with a global footprint and a robust presence in China, LANXESS is dedicated to balancing the needs of economy, ecology and society. We are also glad to join hands with our peers and upstream and downstream partners to promote the sustainable development of the industry value chain while enhancing the public’s awareness of the chemical industry’s dedication to green development,” Ming Cheng Chien, President LANXESS Asia-Pacific Region, said.

Carbon footprint measured to empower accurate carbon reduction along the value chain

LANXESS has long been integrating sustainability into every aspect of its business. As early as in 2019, LANXESS became one of the first chemical companies in the world to set the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2040 (scope 1 and 2). In August 2022, LANXESS announced its plan to achieve climate neutrality along the entire value chain by 2050 (scope 3). To achieve its scope 3 targets, LANXESS has launched the Net Zero Value Chain Program, planning to switch to sustainable raw materials, green logistics and a climate-neutral product portfolio.

Meanwhile, to accurately measure carbon footprint, LANXESS has also developed an innovative product carbon footprint calculation tool. It can act as a measurable, feasible and controllable driver for carbon reduction throughout the supply chain. This tool uses existing data from various business units and calculates the emissions generated using a cradle-to-gate approach. This includes greenhouse gas emissions during production, product-specific emissions related to raw materials, energy, operating materials and transport and emissions from waste disposal.

These significant efforts earned LANXESS the 2023 Responsible Care Best Company and Best Project - Green Footprint Awards from AICM, at the 2023 Responsible Care Award Ceremony.

Product innovation to help customers realize green transformation

For LANXESS, sustainability also means combining climate protection with customer needs. With innovation as a driver, LANXESS is providing a growing portfolio of sustainable products to help end customers realize green transformation.

In the coatings industry, for example, LANXESS has in its Ningbo plant implemented the patented technology-based “Ningbo Process”. The process ensures the removal of about 98.5% of nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases and about 99.5% of ammonia and nitrate nitrogen from wastewater, thereby producing the “green” iron oxide red.

In view of this, CFCN recognized LANXESS as Outstanding Raw Material Supplier at the Award Ceremony of the 14th Gold Award of China Coatings. According to the organizing committee, LANXESS strictly controls quality, forges high quality with good raw materials, shares weal and woe with coatings enterprises, and provides perfect solutions for product competitiveness in different business scenarios. LANXESS is also deeply involved in various aspects such as cost control, low-carbon and environmental performance, innovates in technology, guarantees supply, and works side by side with coatings enterprises to build a sustainable ecological industry chain.

Responsible care to cultivate green chemical talents

On the basis of promoting sustainable development of itself and its value chain, LANXESS also actively demonstrates to the public the efforts made by chemical companies in health, safety and environmental quality through activities such as “Open-to-Public Day” and industry workshops.

In the AICM annual Open-to-Public Day, LANXESS has been innovating in activity forms such as plant tours, fun chemistry classes, and chemistry experiments, implementing and promoting the concept of Responsible Care, and deepening the mutual understanding and trust between local governments and the public. By displaying its innovative and environmentally friendly products and production processes to the surrounding communities and the public, LANXESS has brought the chemical industry closer to people, allowing them to reacquaint themselves with chemistry from a different perspective and to understand the social responsibility of chemical companies.

For more than a decade, LANXESS has held 17 Open-to-Public Day events in Shanghai, Changzhou, Wuxi, Qingdao, Liyang, Ningbo and Nantong sites, attracting over 3,200 residents, teachers and students, professionals, volunteers and media representatives.

Recently, LANXESS combined it with LANXESS Family Day. Through interesting chemical experiments, the company has further familiarized the families of its employees, especially the students, with chemistry, and kept cultivating talents for the green future of the industry. This innovative practice won LANXESS the 2022 Open-to-Public Day Best Practice Award by AICM.
