LANXESS promotes photography workshops for children and young people from Northeast, Southeast and South of Brazil regions

The initiative is part of a cultural project supported by the company under the Rouanet law and has served about 300 children in 4 States

LANXESS, a leading specialty chemicals company, joined with photographer Valdemir Cunha, one of the main documentarians of environment and nature from Brazil, to support the execution of a photojournalism book that shows how the Brazilian people deals with water in their daily lives. The images taken by Valdemir Cunha are part of the book titled Água (Water), recently launched, and sponsored by LANXEES. The project Água also included a series of five photography workshops, held in 4 States which served about 300 children and young people, between 10 and 16 years old – also with the support of LANXESS.

The workshops were held in primary and secondary schools, and in neighborhood associations, in the cities of Cabo de Santo Agostinho (PE), Duque de Caxias (RJ), Porto Feliz (São Paulo), São Leopoldo (RS) and Nova Santa Rita (RS). The workshops were designed to serve two groups of 30 young people, between 11 and 15 years old. In these workshops, students had the opportunity of photographing with the camera used by Valdemir in the making of the book, but they also used their own cellphones to take photographs, learning with this study the concepts of composition, aesthetics and light. The photographer took the opportunity to bring to the groups a critical view of social networks and image, as means of communication.

All participants received a book version adapted especially for them, with colored images and different from those which were chosen for the book elaboration. The authors of the three best photos of each group received as a prize a copy of the book Água and the school won a copy of the work to be made available in its libraries and used by teachers, in day to day work with the students.

The workshops took place in the neighborhoods associations of Bela Vista and Sapucaia in Cabo de Santo Agostinho (PE) and in Duque de Caxias (RJ) downtown, with students from Colégio Guadalajara. In Porto Feliz, the project was presented at the rural school EMEF Prof.a Maria Aparecida Fernandes Leite, and, in the southern region, the presentation was held at school Miguel Couto in Nova Santa Rita, and in municipal school Santa Marta, in São Leopoldo.
